Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

St. Patrick's Day Dinner

I eat corned beef and cabbage just once a year.
I actually quite like the corned beef,
but the cabbage is a bit trickier.
Normally I cook the corned beef in a big pot on the stove,
and add the cabbage at the very end,
but today I was gone all day so I put everything in the crock pot.
I am not used to crock pot cooking,
and so I put the cabbage in with the corned beef,
and let it cook all day.
Soggy, soggy cabbage.
The corned beef turned out fine, though.
Hopefully I'll remember next year to wait on the cabbage.

First Green!!

I went out for lunch with my sister in downtown Salt Lake City today.
As we were driving by one of the streets, I caught my First Glimpse of green this year.
It's been warm, and the trees have been budding-
but lo and behold, real leaves!
Emily and I cheered!
And since we were stopped for a light in the car,
I was able to roll down the window and get a picture.
(No, I was not driving, anyway.)
What a perfect sight for St. Patrick's Day!
Even if he DID drive all the snakes out of Ireland.

Slot Canyons and Climbing

The OAC went rock climbing.
I went hiking.
A little scrambling in this canyon:

... and then to this small but pretty slot canyon:

It's nice to have a little hiking time on the weekend!

BLM Breakfast

BLM (or Bureau of Land Management) land is great for camping,
especially with a group of people.
You don't need reservations,
you don't pay fees (for most places),
you just pick a nice spot and drive to it.
The OAC went down to southern Utah this weekend and I went with.
It was nice during the day but COLD at night.
So a hot breakfast was very pleasant.
I had hot herb tea and sausage (grilled precooked kielbasa).
